Liability Car Insurance

Car Insurance - Liability

Liability Insurance - Almost every state requires that a car is covered by liability insurance. You can check our State Auto Insurance Requirement Page for details about your area but you should plan on having at least the minimum and probably a good deal more.

People often assume that liability car insurance covers their vehicle and property, however this is not the case. Liability insurance protects you from being financially responsible for the property and/or injury of others involved in an accident that you are at fault for. Another common misconception is that the less valuable your vehicle is the less liability insurance is needed. Regardless of the financial value of your car it can cause serious damage to an expensive car or even worse cause injury to another driver or pedestrian. Without proper liability coverage you might find yourself paying for some (or all) of that expensive car or even medical expenses out of your own pocket.

Liability insurance is commonly sold in a split limit policy In other words the amount of protection afforded is split into different categories Below is an explanation of a commonly suggested liability insurance level - 100/300/50:

  • 100 = $100,000 of bodily injury insurance coverage per person involved in an accident.

  • 300 = $300,000 of total insurance coverage of bodily injury per incident

  • 50 = $50,000 worth of insurance coverage for property damage per incident
